Medellin OUTdoor Adventure: Guatape Day Excursion
A popular weekend destination for Colombians, Guatapé is known as Colombia’s most colorful town, full of just-as-colorful handcrafts and charming residents. We´ll pick you up from your hotel in the morning for this excursion. Along the way, stop for a quick refreshment at a replica of old El Peñol, a town that was submerged to create the giant lake system generating 35% of Colombia’s electricity. Get an overall perspective of this immense series of lakes and islands that were engineered. Cruise on a motorboat for an hour to see the beautiful islands and the impressive country homes that line their coasts.
Back on land, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant serving the area’s specialty: grilled trout cooked in garlic sauce, or try one of the other traditional dishes from the area. After lunch, explore the pretty, cobblestoned streets and alleyways of Guatapé. Learn a bit of its history, reconstruction, its zocalo friezes, or visit some of the shops along the way.
We’ll also visit the 10 million-year-old La Piedra, the world’s third-largest rock, once worshiped by the area’s early inhabitants. They didn’t have those 649 stairs now rising to the 650-foot-high top of the rock. Climbing is optional, but your endurance is rewarded by an exceptional view over the surrounding lake system while enjoying a refreshment.
